Thorstein B. Veblen (1857-1929)

Principal figura de la escuela del Institucionalismo Americano, Thorstein Bunde Veblen fue un filósofo, sociólogo y economista altamente controvertido.

Nació en Wisconsin de padres de origen noruego. Estudia en el Carleton College y las universidades John Hopkins, Cornell y Yale, en la que obtiene el doctorado en 1884. Veblen trabaja en las universidades de Chicago (de donde será expulsado por mantener relaciones sexuales con alumnas), Stanford (de la que le fuerzan a irse por su actitud crítica hacia los hombres de negocio) y Missouri, sin que en ningún caso puede superar el nivel de profesor auxiliar. Fuertemente crítico con el "stablishment", fue elegido, sin embargo por sus colegas de profesión para la presidencia de la American Economic Association.
